| The mission of Special Olympics of
Michigan is to provide sports training and athletic competition
in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults
with mental retardation who live our state. The State Basketball
Tournament and Skills Competition routinely brings in over
500 athletes from all over the state.
Since 1982, the Grand Rapids Jaycees have
organized and hosted the State Basketball Tournament and Skills
Competition for Special Olympics of Michigan. The Grand Rapids
Jaycees are responsible for everything from setup of the basketball
tournament to organizing the dance held for the athletes.

The 2008 Special Olympics of Michigan State
Senior Basketball Tournament will be held March 15 at Forest
Hills Central Schools. Volunteers are needed in the following
areas (Available shifts: 8am-1pm; 12:30-5:30pm):
Arts & Crafts: Assist
athletes with arts & crafts projects
Credentials Checker: Check
credentials of athletes at meal times
DJ (Main Gym Only): Run
music system for warm-ups, timeouts, and half-times (experience
preferred)
Floater: Help where needed
Hall Monitor: Ensures
order is kept in hallways of gyms
Hospitality: Help deliver
meals to site and ensure sites are stocked with necessary
supplies
Medical: Provides first
aid to athletes as needed (medical experience required)
Movie Room: Monitor athletes
as they watch movies
Official: Officiate basketball
games (officiating experience required)
Scorekeeper: Keeps track
of team lineups, score, and fouls in scorebook (experience
preferred; training provided)
Timekeeper: Keeps track
of time, score and possession on electronic scoreboard (training
provided)
